Regarding the perception of size: Light colors appear larger than dark colors on the same background. This is compounded by the "advance" of the lighter color. For elements of similar shape and size but of different color, this effect is relatively easy to balance, since the lightening of an element's color, increasing its perceived size, simultaneously lowers its chromatic "weight".
