Allow Successful Transfer of Rules

Although most educators endeavor to have their students "understand" rather than just memorize rules, it is important to remember that personal rules for performance are an essential feature of human understanding. In terms of problem solving, a "rule" is simply an action that is triggered by a given state or condition in the short-term memory. Performance on a task is improved when rules can be successfully transferred to a new situation. In order to facilitate this transfer, remind the reader of the immediate goals, the intermediate results obtained, and the knowledge required for action. Allow the reader to recognize when this knowledge has been attained while providing an opportunity for appropriate interaction.
